An Illinois lawmaker is proposing legislation that would require installation of smoke alarms with long-life batteries in order to prevent deaths and injuries from residential fires.
The bill requires that by January 2023, if a residential smoke alarm is past its 10 year lifespan, it would be required to be replaced by a smoke alarm with a long-term, sealed battery.
